Meet Caroline

Hi there, I’m Caroline, although I mostly go by Caro. I’m a coach and facilitator, helping people lead through change. For thirty years, I worked in corporate across different sectors and in different countries, doing all manners of organizational change.

I’m fascinated with driving meaningful change across a global ecosystem, passionate about owning our humanness through change and committed to investing in change leadership capabilities for better, quality outcomes.

Born in Zambia and raised in South Africa, one of my richest learning experiences was playing a role in the organizational transformation, alongside the societal transformation, of a South African company following the end of apartheid in 1991. It was a time of gut-wrenching heartache as well as witnessing the seemingly impossible happen. Bombings in sacred places, hijackings in stores, people held at gunpoint, my role was to support people through events, respect their experience, and together find tiny steps towards a pathway into some sense of normalcy. Many times, situations arose where differing expectations, assumptions, and meaning collided into confusion, or worse. Circumstances which, many times, I felt sorely ill-equipped to handle. There were also goosebump moments where understanding clicked, a sense of “having more in common than apart” morphed, and in hindsight, the witnessing of an emerging new future. In 1998 I moved to Amsterdam and began a career in global financial services, again involved organizational change, this time related to bank mergers, divestitures, growth, and integration, initially in Amsterdam and subsequently New York.  In 2014, I had the opportunity to work side by side with a team of globally respected financial crime compliance leaders in delivering a challenging organization transformation initiative. Important milestones were achieved amidst high pressures and competing demands. And at times, progress stalled.

What was it that sustained people to give their best and succeed against all odds? What fueled alignment around challenges? What ingredient was in the social glue “I’ve got your back” cementing shared commitment and accountability? And what can stonewall or demolish all of this?

My corporate experience in organizational change taught me
FOUR important life lessons.

1. People Drive Change.

If the intent is for change to build a better quality future, this has to start with yourself. To be willing to be changed, to change, and to keep evolving. Anchoring on the Pythagoras quote “Astonishing! Everything is Intelligent,” solutions and resources lie within oneself.

2. Self-Care is Essential to Giving the Best of Ourselves.

Relaxing when you go on holiday once or twice a year is a broken model. To instil trust to unlock collaboration and new ways of thinking, to drive meaningful change, there is a need for a new model, one that builds in a regular cadence to reflect and to recharge oneself.

3. Part of Being Human is to Feel.

Not just happy emotions of curiosity, enthusiasm, perseverance, but also frustration, doubt, disappointment, indignation. Giving voice to arising emotions informs us of what is important and what actions need to be taken.

4. Intentional Practice.

Everyone leaves a footprint. I believe, irrespective of role, everyone has a leadership impact. When we hit challenges, which we inevitably do, we precipitate to the level of our instinctual habits. Being intentional about the impact we want to have, and commitment to consistently practice these behaviors, the better equipped we will be to meet those challenges.
